| Holiday Parody: "Here We Come A-Laureling" |
[Dec. 23rd, 2009|07:55 pm] |
Happy Holidays, everyone! A while back, Danny from the blog "Northward Ho" quoted a commenter on a forum who made me into a verb. As his blog here http://northwardho.blogspot.com/2009/10/laureling-new-word-to-honor-laurel.html quotes, "I propose that we coin a new word for that -- the word "Laureling" -- in honor of Laurel Kornfeld, who quickly shows up in every forum on the web that mentions "Pluto" and "planet..."
Since I love writing parodies, this was just begging for one. So here it is, sung to the tune of "Here We Come A Wassailing."
Here we come a-Laureling In person or online; Here we come defending Our planet number nine!
Love and joy come to you, And to all the planets too, And God bless you And save us all from the IAU! And God save us all from the IAU!
We are not daily beggars Who beg from door to door, But we come with petitions For Pluto to restore!
Love and joy come to you, And to all the planets too, And God bless you And save us all from the IAU! And God save us all from the IAU! God bless all of the teachers With the courage to resist And teach their students to keep Pluto On the planet list!
Love and joy come to you, And to all the planets too, And God bless you And save us all from the IAU! And God save us all from the IAU! Clyde Tombaugh and Venetia Burney, New Horizons too, We’ll keep fighting for Pluto, And we’ll win it thanks to you! Love and joy come to you, And to all the planets too, And God bless you And save us all from the IAU! And God save us all from the IAU! |

| Declaration ... for now |
[Dec. 23rd, 2009|04:01 pm] |
With the exception of a tasty lunch in the congenial company of e_bourne I have been online almost continuously since I got up this morning. This has had to do with job search things, and the time is well-justified. I am, however, positively burnt out with being on the computer today, so I'm logging off, and expect not to reappear until later this evening or possibly not even until tomorrow morning.
Have a lovely afternoon, Internets. I bid you adieu. |

| it's just a flesh wound |

WARREN, Mich. (AP) – A 52-year-old man complained only about the cold weather before walking into a diner with a five-inch knife sticking out of his chest. The unnamed man called a Warren 911 operator on Sunday night to ask that an ambulance be sent to Bray's, an eatery in neighboring Hazel Park. He said he had been stabbed during a robbery attempt half a mile away, then walked to the restaurant and called 911 from a pay phone.
On a recording of the call, the man gives a vague description of his attacker before saying, "I'm gonna sit down at Bray's 'cause they got a chair and it's cold out here."
Restaurant employee George Mirdita told The Detroit News the man calmly ordered coffee.
Police said Tuesday that the man is recovering. |

| Dadros, art by Steve Rider |
[Dec. 22nd, 2009|03:11 pm] |
One of my day job colleagues is an artist named Steve Rider, with whom I share a love of the TV show Doctor Who. A few weeks ago, Steve was showing me elaborate plans he had found for building your own Dalek, and I mentioned how useful I would find a Davros-style wheelchair.
Next thing I know, Steve has sent me the following piece of original digital art (posted with permission):

I'm very pleased to say that as of this afternoon, he has also gifted me with the original sketch, framed.
Now I just have to find something for my daughters to annotate.... |

| Lovely days |
[Dec. 22nd, 2009|11:57 am] |
In the last two weeks I've done the following: ( A list of pleasant things including theater reviews and lovely people... )
7) Monday (i.e., yesterday), ladyjestocost, bedii and I drove south to Portland for a trip to Powell's with a pit-stop at Shipwreck Beads. We also got to squeeze in a too-brief visit with davidlevine and kate_yule, who had brought back smashed coins and pins for me from their excursion to Disney World, bless them. Spending time with Margaret and Bruce was lovely--we haven't done it in such a long time. I came away from Powell's having shopped on some significant trade-in credit, and returned with Canticle by our own kenscholes; The Family by Jeff Sharlet about which Rachel Maddow's been in a fit over the last few weeks; A Shadow Falls by Nick Brandt, a magnificent collection of photographs of Africa's big animals; and Emma Who Saved My Life by Wilton Barnhardt, who wrote a novel called Gospel that succeeded in telling a well-written, compelling story about a lost gospel without resorting to albino monks and code-breaking.
In betwixt all this, there was Spanky's ear saga, exciting telephone interviews that I hope will bear fruit (even despite the brain freeze that occurred during this morning's call ::sigh::), quality time with jackwilliambell and pet-sitting for pixxelpuss's critters. The madness continues in the days to come. It's all goodness, I think. I'm fortunate to have such friends and such experiences. Life, though challenging as ever, is good. |

| Thank You, Lewis Carroll |
[Dec. 22nd, 2009|12:37 am] |
Why am I up after midnight? We got the kids to go to sleep on the early side, and then they woke up and would not go back to sleep. Eventually, we got one of them down, but the other just wouldn't go to sleep, despite being tired.
Nomi sat with her and starting reciting "The Walrus and the Carpenter," which gave me an idea. I found my Annotated "Hunting of the Snark" and started to read it to her.
By the time "the Baker had fainted away," so had she.
Good night. |

Although there are a few points when it looks like Benny is having a hard time holding it together, I think he was in control the entire time. So:
